ZINE !

Updated: Feb 15, 2022

This zine captures a variety of emotions through digital photos and artwork. I knew that when I began working on this piece that I wanted to convey an intangible idea through symbols found in the real world. I also incorporated a silhouette of a person in each page to represent emotion without facial expressions as I wanted the supporting images to tell the story. Beyond visual images, I alluded to different colors to further convey the symbolism commonly observed in each feeling. The first image is representative of love with different shades of pink and two hearts connected between the figures. The mountains, for example, symbolize the ups and downs of a relationship while the hands portray a connection. The second image portrays loss in the form of time, a piece of oneself, and death. Happiness takes the form of a yellow background and enlightenment with fisted hands to show positivity. In the next page of the zine, I placed Xs around the silhouette to represent self doubt and a hand reaching for something not yet achieved. I wanted to portray sadness in a variety of ways and therefore added locks to exemplify the feeling of being trapped. With bells ringing, heart beats, and an explosion of bright green, I placed a silhouette of someone jumping in the air with hands up to represent excitement. Next, I alluded to the feeling of anxiousness with thoughts jumbled around the page and an error message as this is how I often feel when stressed out. The seventh image portrays calmness through meditation and a balance of multiple worlds. I added fireflies to emphasize tranquility and knew that lotus flowers are a common symbol of this emotion. Finally, I created a rage-filled background of fire and holes in the wall to represent a common act of violence associated with anger.
